A wet room swaps the shower tray for a level, fully waterproofed floor that drains straight to a gully, so there is no step to climb over. It is a common choice for older or less mobile people who need level access.

What the conversion involves

After the strip-out, a floor former is fitted that falls gently towards the drain. Graham then tanks the floor and the lower walls with a waterproof membrane, because in a wet room the tiles are the finish, not the waterproofing. The drain can be a linear channel along one wall or a centre gully.

Screens, tiles and safety

Most wet rooms have a fixed glass screen to keep spray off the toilet and basin. Floor tiles need a good slip rating, and smaller tiles follow the falls more easily than large slabs.

Timber and concrete floors

Upstairs timber floors usually take a wet room well. A ground-floor concrete slab can take more work to get the drain low enough, so we check which you have before quoting.

If you would rather keep a low shower tray, a standard bathroom fit may be simpler.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will water leak through to the room below?
Not when it is tanked properly. The membrane runs across the whole floor and up the walls, and the drain is sealed into it, so the floor is waterproof under the tiles.
Is a wet room a good idea for an elderly parent?
Yes. A level floor with no tray edge, a fold-down seat and grab rails make showering safer. Tell us about any mobility needs and the room can be planned around them.
What does a wet room cost?
A wet room price depends on the floor type, where the drain can go, how much of the room is tanked, and the screen and tiles you choose.
