Preparation decides the finish
Tiles only stay flat and fixed if the surface behind them is sound. Old tiles usually come off, loose plaster is cut back, and in showers the walls are boarded and tanked first. Floors are checked for movement: a timber floor may need overboarding and a concrete one may need levelling compound before any tile goes down.
Large-format and natural stone
Big porcelain tiles need a flatter surface and more care to avoid lipped edges. Natural stone needs sealing and is heavier on the wall. Both take longer to lay than standard ceramic tiles, and that shows in the price.
Trims, grout and cuts
Edge trims and grout colour are agreed before work starts, and the layout is set out so cut tiles end up in corners rather than in the middle of a wall.
